When I purchased the acreage where I now live, I had no idea that I was going
to raise and sell strawberries. Being located at the dead-end of a township road
just isn't the best location for a business. But I began thinking of ways to
supplement the corn and soybean crop, and thought about strawberries.
During my childhood, my parents had a small strawberry patch that earned
them some extra income. Now, years later, I am following in their footsteps; I'm realizing
that raising and selling strawberries is a very interesting and fun side business.
I planted my first strawberry patch in 1992, with the first harvest being in 1993.
I don't have the largest patch around, but I sure try to have the best. I have received
many compliments over the years on how weed-free and clean the patches are kept. Also,
I don't have my pickers go through the patches before I allow pick-your-owners in the patch. I try to control the picking areas so that everyone will have an equal opportunity to have a pleasurable picking experience.
